"Swiss emigration to America predates the formation of the United States, notably in connection with the persecution of Anabaptism during the Swiss Reformation and the formation of the Amish community. In the 19th century, there was substantial immigration of Swiss farmers, who preferred rural settlements in the Midwest. "

"Between 1710 and 1750, some 25,000 Swiss are estimated to have settled in British North America, especially in Pennsylvania, Virginia, and South Carolina. Many were members of the Reformed church and were actively recruited by entrepreneurs such as Jean Pierre Purry (1675-1736), the founder of Purrysburg, South Carolina. About 4,000 Swiss Mennonites settled in Pennsylvania, many of whom had first gone to the Palatinate from which the next generation emigrated in search of fertile, affordable land and greater toleration of their creed."    Read more: https://www.everyculture.com/multi/Sr-Z/Swiss-Americans.html#ixzz7Bxd43j1o

"Zook (Zaug, Zaugg, Zuck, Zug, Zowg), a Mennonite and Amish family from Signau in the Swiss canton of Bern. Caspar Zougck, of Schuselbuhl near Sumiswald, was one of the Anabaptist speakers at the Bern disputation in 1538. Uli Zougg, a preacher in the canton of Bern, was imprisoned in 1644. Those in America are the descendants of the brothers Christian, Moritz, and Johannes Zug, who were grandsons of Hans Zoug, a Mennonite preacher of Signau, Bern, who with others was imprisoned in Switzerland for his faith 1660-71. The three brothers arrived in Philadelphia in 1742 and settled in Chester County, Pennsylvania. The colonial archives of Pennsylvania list seven other Zugs who arrived in Philadelphia 1727-96, but their descendants do not appear in American Amish or Mennonite history. C. Z. Mast in 1942 estimated the total number of living descendants of the three immigrant brothers at 25,000, the largest concentration being in Chester County, PA. Many are members of the Mennonite, Amish, Brethren, or Quaker churches. Christian Zug's youngest son became an Amish preacher and his congregation, near Malvern, about 1795 built the first Amish Mennonite meetinghouse in America. A considerable number of his descendants and also those of Moritz Zug are Quakers. Shem Zook, Mennonite writer and historian, and C. Z. Yoder, Mennonite Church leader in Sunday school and missionary activities at the turn of the 19th century, are descendants of Moritz. The third brother, Johannes, is the progenitor of a large number of Old Order Amish in Chester County. Many of them are members of the John and Daniel Esch families (see Esch). Ordained men bearing the name Zook are found in many states from Pennsylvania to Oregon and from Michigan to Florida, but only in those branches originally related to the Amish: Conservative Mennonite, 2 preachers; Mennonite Church, 2 bishops, 3 preachers; Old Order Amish (in Pennsylvania). 2 bishops, 5 preachers, and (in Tennessee) one preacher. Ellrose D. Zook is executive editor of the Mennonite Publishing House, Scottdale, Pennsylvania."

Zook House Former location of the house, about 300 feet northeast of the current site. The land in the area of the house was first sold by William Penn to Welch Quaker Richard Thomas in 1683 as part of the Welsh Tract. Thomas's son, also named Richard, claimed the land in two stages, 1704 and 1717. He sold the land to English Quaker John Morgan in 1718, and Morgan sold the land to English Quaker William Owen in 1734. Owen built the house in 1750 and sold land and the house to Quaker James Brown in 1760. Morritz (or Morris) Zug bought the farm and house in 1770. Morritz Zug later anglicized his name to Zook. He and his family were founding members of the Great Valley Ominist (Amish) Society.

"It is only since comparatively recently that Switzerland has been able to feed all its inhabitants, and this inevitably led to a continual stream of emigration over the years. The last major waves of emigration were after the great famine of 1816/1817, between 1845-1855, and between 1880-1885."

"During the 19th century, many [Jurassiens and Neuchâtelois] left Switzerland to start a new life in America. The local council gave them a financial incentive to do so (typically 400 Swiss francs, or 6 months wages for a working man), in order to have one mouth less to feed during a period of economic recession."
